Prenatal Testing Sample Collection
Effective January 1st 2013, Gamma Dynacare will be implementing a required change with respect to the collection of samples for pre-transfusion testing.
Section 10.3.1 of Canadian Standards Association (CSA) document regarding collection of pre-transfusion samples dictates that “…the name or initials of the person drawing the blood sample for receipt of a blood product, shall be documented, as well as the date and time of collection. This information shall be retained for one year in a place where it can be readily retrieved if needed”. Rho(D) Immune Globulin (Trade names RhoGAM, Rhophylac, WinRho SDF, etc.) is classified as a blood product by the CSA.
Gamma-Dynacare is asking clinicians to comply with this CSA requirement effective January 1, 2013. We will allow a three-month grace period, during which time pre-transfusion requests will be processed despite a failure to identify the phlebotomist on the requisition. However, beginning March 31, 2013, pre-transfusion testing will be cancelled if the name of the phlebotomist is not clearly identified on the requisition. For more information, please see the Client Notice below.
